Two True Stories
Below are two experiences that completely changed the way I thought about the importance of fire safety.
One afternoon in the 1970’s, I was suddenly surprised to see grey smoke pouring out of my neighbor’s kitchen window.
I immediately ran over and discovered she had fallen asleep on her couch with a metal pot of water sitting on the stove and the burner turned on high. The water had completely boiled away, and the overheated pot filled much of the home with a thick grey smoke. What was alarming to me was that none of her so called “smoke” detectors had gone off yet. They did eventually, but only after a significant delay. Not good! Being a company that specialized in home security, I knew I needed to get a better understanding of why this happened and what to do about it. After researching, I discovered the problem and what I believe is a superior solution.
Ironically, years later the same thing happened to my own family home. One of my son’s friend was playing with matches in our garage. It got away from him, and he started a fire that could not be controlled. My wife rushed everyone out of the house and gathered everyone across the street. (I was at work). Here is the kicker. By the time she got everyone out safely, a fire truck was already coming down our street because the fire alarm system immediately called the fire department! This saved our irreplaceable items in the garage and kept the house from being completely consumed. And most of all, no one was injured!
